Reduced EDT — FAQ
What is reduced EDT?
A shortened Essential Driver Training programme for drivers who hold a full licence from a country Ireland does not have a licence-exchange agreement with. Instead of the standard 12 EDT lessons you complete 6, and you may also be exempt from the six-month waiting rule before sitting the test.
Who qualifies for reduced EDT?
Broadly: you hold a full driving licence from a non-exchange country, you held it for at least two years before getting your Irish learner permit, it hasn't been expired more than six months when you apply, you're resident in Ireland and hold a valid Irish learner permit. Which lessons do I take on reduced EDT?
Approved drivers are exempt from EDT lessons 2, 3, 4, 8, 11 and 12. The six lessons you complete focus on Irish road rules, positioning, anticipation, sharing the road, changing direction and speed management — the areas where driving in Ireland differs most from what you already know.
How much does reduced EDT cost?
