10Steps
12EDT lessons
1Goal — your licence
Phase 1 — Before lessons
1
Prepare for the theory test
Study the Rules of the Road, road signs, hand signals and safe driving practices. Use our free study guides — no account needed.
2
Book your theory test
Booked through the RSA online portal. Bring photo ID. You can re-sit if needed — most centres have slots within 1–2 weeks.
3
Apply for your learner permit
Apply online or in person at any NDLS office. You'll need your theory test pass cert, PPSN, proof of address and a fee of €35.
Phase 2 — Start training
4
Book your 12 EDT lessons
Essential Driver Training — 12 mandatory lessons spread over at least 6 months. Each lesson covers a specific topic set by the RSA. We track your progress at every session.
5
Get a car — use yours or rent ours
For lessons you can use your own car (we check it meets RSA requirements) or we bring ours. For the test itself, you can also rent our test car — includes a pre-test warm-up drive.
Phase 3 — Prepare & test
6
Get more — practice, refresher & pre-test
Not quite ready? Add extra lessons targeting your weak areas, a mock-test session with fault correction, or a confidence refresher before the big day. Most learners need a few extra lessons beyond the 12 EDT minimum.
7
Book your driving test
Book through the RSA portal once your EDT record is complete. Choose your local test centre — we prepare you for Tallaght, Leixlip, Mulhuddart and surrounding centres.
8
🏆 Pass your test
On test day: bring your learner permit, wear comfortable shoes, arrive 10 minutes early. Read our test day checklist — it covers everything you need to know the night before and on the morning.
Phase 4 — After the test
9
Apply for your full driving licence
After passing, you have 2 years to apply for your full licence at any NDLS office. Bring your test pass certificate, current learner permit, PPSN and a recent photo.
10
🚀 Don't stop here — keep learning
Getting your licence is the beginning, not the end. The first two years are statistically the highest-risk period. Advanced driving, eco-driving and IPSGA techniques can make you safer and more confident for the rest of your driving career.
