1
Prepare for the theory test
Before you can book your theory test you need to study the Irish driving theory test material. The most effective way is to use the official Prometric apps — the same question bank used in the real test.
📖 Also recommended
Rules of the Road
The official RSA handbook — covers every topic in the theory test in full detail. Highly recommended alongside the app. Free PDF download from the RSA website.

2
Book your theory test
The Irish driving theory test is managed by Prometric. You book online through their portal — choose your preferred test centre, date and time. You'll need your learner permit application number or PPSN to complete the booking.

💡 Good to know
Before you book
Make sure you have studied using the official apps or Rules of the Road first — step 1 above. Test slots at popular centres fill quickly, especially on weekends. You can cancel or reschedule up to 2 business days before your appointment.
3
Apply for your learner permit
Once you have passed your theory test, apply for your learner permit through the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS). You can apply online or visit any NDLS centre in person. You'll need your theory test pass cert, PPSN, proof of address and a passport photo.

🔧 Manual or automatic?
Automatic
Easier to
learn
Nearly all modern cars from recent years use an automatic gearbox — many drivers never need manual at all.

Manual
Open
licence
Pass in a manual car and your licence covers both manual and automatic — complete freedom on any vehicle.
✓ Full open licence
💡 Good to know
Switching cars is never a problem
You can switch between a manual and an automatic car at any point during your training — there are no restrictions. The only thing that matters is the car you bring on the day of your driving test. That car decides which category goes on your licence.
5
Book your driving test
To book your driving test you need an account on the RSA Driver Portal — My Road Safety. This is your personal dashboard for everything connected to your Irish driving licence journey.
🎯
Set your learning goals Define where you want to be and let the portal guide you through each stage of the process.
📊
Check your EDT progress See which of your 12 EDT lessons have been logged, and how many remain before you're eligible to test.
📅
Book your driving test Once all 12 EDT lessons are recorded, you can pick a test centre, date and time slot directly through the portal.
🔐
Open RSA Driver Portal myroadsafety.rsa.ie — Create your account or log in
💡 Tip
Create your account early
Register on the portal as soon as you get your learner permit — don't wait until your EDT lessons are done. Test slots at busy centres like Tallaght and Leixlip get taken quickly, so having your account ready means you can book the moment you're eligible.
6
Get more practice before your test
⚠️
Going unprepared is a waste of time and money

Your driving test costs time to book, time to attend and money to sit. If you're not genuinely ready on the day, you'll fail, lose your fee and wait months for the next available slot. Extra preparation before your test is always cheaper than resitting it.

Before your test, make sure you put in the extra miles. You have two good options — and ideally both:
Practice with a friend or family member — everyday driving builds confidence and muscle memory
Get professional help — structured sessions focused on test standard and test routes
Professional sessions — what we offer:
🗺️
All sessions are carried out on the actual test routes for your local test centre — unless you request a different area.
7
Get a car for your test
You have two options for your driving test — bring your own car, or rent the instructor's car. Here's what you need to know for each.
🚗 Using your own car
Your car must be fully legal and roadworthy on test day. The tester will check before the test begins — if anything is missing, the test will not proceed and you will lose your fee.
Valid NCT Certificate of roadworthiness — must not be expired on test day
Valid motor tax Tax disc or online record must be current
Valid insurance covering you as a driver You must be named or covered on a policy that includes the vehicle
Car in good condition and clean No warning lights or dashboard alarms — any active fault light may cause the test to be cancelled
📋
New rule — since March 2026

You may now present a written official document from your insurance company confirming that you are insured to drive the vehicle. This replaces the need to carry the full insurance certificate on the day.

or
🔑 Rent the instructor's car
No NCT worries, no insurance headaches. The instructor's car comes with full insurance coverage — you just show up and drive.

🏆 Pass your test
🏆
Well done — you've come a long way.
I'm proud of YOU. Just one more step and you're there.
Relax — you've got this. Stay calm, stay focused, check your mirrors, observe your surroundings, watch for hazards and plan ahead. It's just 40 minutes of driving. You've done it a hundred times already — this is just one more drive.
Before test day, take time to brush up on these key areas. Testers look for exactly these things — being sharp on all of them gives you a real edge.

Didn't pass this time
Don't worry — this isn't the end.

🚀 Keep learning for life
🎊
Well done — this is a massive achievement.
You've built a skill that will stay with you for life. Now you can taste real freedom — go wherever you want, whenever you want, entirely on your own terms. That feeling never gets old.
🧠 A word from your instructor
But remember — a licence is a beginning, not a finish line. The road is unpredictable. It doesn't care how good you are or how confident you feel. There is always another driver out there who isn't as careful, as skilled or as aware as you are. And one moment of overconfidence is all it takes.
We never stop learning — the best drivers in the world are still improving every single drive
Be honest with yourself — know your weaknesses, acknowledge your mistakes, and work on them
The road is shared — respect every other person on it, because not everyone out there is as good as you
Stay humble, stay sharp — overconfidence is the quiet danger that catches even experienced drivers
Master every aspect — smooth braking, fuel efficiency, advanced awareness, all-weather driving — keep growing
Drive with skill. Drive with respect. Drive for life.

Licence exchange
Moving from
another country

You hold a foreign driving licence — EU/EEA or non-EU. The process depends on where your licence was issued. Some can be exchanged directly; others require a full or partial Irish test.

1
EU / EEA licence? — Direct exchange at your local NDLS office, no test needed
2
Non-EU licence? — May require theory test + driving test. Some countries have bilateral agreements
3
Test required? — We assess your current level and prepare you efficiently for the Irish test format
4
Reduced EDT — Experienced drivers may qualify for fewer mandatory lessons
