The hill start your car might be doing for you.

The tester asks you to pull in and stop on a hill, then move off again. Some cars will hold you there for about a second while you swap pedals. Most learners have never checked whether theirs is one of them. Here is what the RSA actually marks, what hill-start assist really does, and the ordinary hills it was never built for.

The short version: the RSA names the parking brake, manual or electronic, as the control that secures the car on the hill start, and says nothing at all about hill-start assist either way. The technology holds you for roughly one to two seconds and drops out the moment you stall. Own the method, and let the car help if it happens to.

I ask learners this most weeks, usually on a slope somewhere around Knocklyon or off the N81: did you hold that on the clutch, or did the car hold it for you? A lot of them genuinely do not know. They stopped, they moved off, nothing rolled, so they assumed it was them. Sometimes the car applied the brakes for a second and handed the hill back before they noticed.

That is a strange thing not to know about your own test. The hill start is the one moment where software can produce the visible outcome the tester is watching for. So be precise about three things: what the RSA marks, what the technology does, and what you should manage without it.

What the tester actually asks, word for word

The scripted instruction, and what happens if the parking brake is not up to the job.

The RSA's Standard Procedures, Training Guide and Health & Safety requirements for conducting driving tests, the copy cover-dated 20 February 2026, gives testers the wording. Under "Hill test", printed page 18: "The Driver Tester should say – 'I want you to pull in and stop on the left/hill.'" Then, once you are stopped and secured, "Driver Tester should then say 'When you are ready you can move off'".

When you are ready. There is no clock in the instruction, so the rush that costs people marks on a hill is self-inflicted. The same page then covers the parking brake, and this is the part almost nobody has read:

RSA, Standard Procedures, Hill test: "If the handbrake/parking brake is not applied/ properly applied, the applicant should be asked to secure the vehicle. If the handbrake/parking brake is seriously defective the test is deemed to be non-conducted, return to the centre. The tester should then record an 'N4' code on the tablet device. A non-conducted report sheet should be completed and issued."

Two very different outcomes. Forget the handbrake and you are asked to secure the car. Turn up with a seriously defective one and the test ends with no result: the RSA's table defines that code as "N4 / Not Roadworthy / Vehicle breakdown/defect, e.g. Bald or damaged tyre, Brake lights etc." A parking brake that will not hold your car is not a driving fault, it is the car being unfit to be tested.

The control the RSA names

The central quote is in the marking guidelines, Making Your Mark, printed page 15, in the handbrake fault list under Vehicle Controls: "Not applying the handbrake at the end of the test. On hill start, vehicle must be secured with its Parking / Hand brake, i.e. manual or electronic brake whichever is fitted."

That settles two arguments at once. The hill start requires the parking brake, and an electronic parking brake counts. Learners with a newer car ask me constantly, and the answer has been sitting in the guidelines the whole time.

The same list adds "Not applied as appropriate on an incline/decline", so facing downhill counts, and "Being applied before the vehicle has come to a halt, or inadequate application, or attempting to drive while the handbrake is still engaged": the two overcorrections frightened learners make.

Is the hill start guaranteed? Close, but be precise. It is a scripted step between the reverse and the parking, and the curtailment rule names it with two others: "Any non-conducted manoeuvres (Reverse, Turnabout, Hill Start) insert the words 'Not conducted' in the notes section". There is a flat "A Hill Start must be conducted" in the document, but it sits in the Category W (tractor) section, so we will not pretend it applies to cars. Plan on doing one.

None of those is an instant fail on its own. You fail on one or more Grade 3, or on "4 of the same grade 2 faults for a single aspect. 6 or more grade 2 faults under the same heading. 9 or more grade 2 faults overall." What hill-start assist is, and for how long

A bridge between two pedals, measured in seconds.

Hill-start assist holds brake pressure for a moment after you lift off the brake, so the car does not roll while your foot travels to the accelerator. That is the whole idea. Makers name it differently and time it differently, and the spread between them is wider than most drivers assume:

Honda reads the slope with a G-force sensor. Kia's manual adds the sentence that should end the debate on its own: "HAC does not replace the need to apply brakes whilst stopped on an incline." That is the manufacturer, not an instructor, calling it a convenience rather than a substitute.

The Volkswagen wording is the most useful detail we found, and we will flag its provenance: we read it in a reproduction of the Polo owner's manual on an owners' community site, not a Volkswagen domain. Hill Hold Assist there needs the car stationary on an incline held by the footbrake, the engine running smoothly, and on a manual the clutch fully down with first or reverse selected. If any of that lapses the function "will be deactivated immediately", including "If the engine is switched off or has stalled."

Read that last part again. The assistance quits when you stall, and stalling is the single most likely thing to go wrong for a learner on a hill. A safety net that disappears at the moment of the fall is not a safety net. It is a convenience during a manoeuvre you have already got right.

Nobody made your car have this

Why "it's a 2017, of course it has it" is not an argument.

Plenty of driver aids arrived because Brussels required them. Hill-start assist is not one: the European Commission's page on vehicle safety systems lists the mandated systems, and hill start assist and hill hold appear nowhere on it. What is mandated is electronic stability control, "on all vehicles (from 1 Nov 2011 for new types of vehicle and 1 Nov 2014 for all new vehicles)", under Article 12 of Regulation (EC) No 661/2009.

The two get blurred constantly, because hill-start assist generally runs on the hardware that stability control brought with it: the same pressure sensors and the same hydraulic valves, holding the brakes closed for a moment instead of correcting a skid. Shared hardware is not a fitted feature, though. Whether the software function is enabled is a manufacturer's decision by model, trim and year, so "it's a 2017, of course it has it" is not an inference you can draw. Neither is the opposite. Add the Irish fleet, where SIMI puts the average car at 9.9 years across roughly 2.47 million cars, petrol at 11.3 and diesel at 10.3, so the realistic first car here was built around 2016. One contrast is worth holding onto. The RSA has banned one assistance feature by name, "The use of 'Park Assist' is not permitted", and has said nothing at all about hill-start assist. Do not read a permission into that silence, or a prohibition either.

How to find out in ten minutes, in both cars

Two handbooks, two settings menus, one honest answer.

  • Search the handbook index by name: hill start assist, Hill-start Assist Control, hill hold assist, hill hold control, HAC, HHC. The naming is all over the place.
  • Open the driver-assistance settings menu. On some cars the function is switchable, so check whether you have it and whether someone has already turned it off.
  • Do it twice, for the car you sit the test in and the car you practise in at home. Those are almost never the same car.
  • Note the parking brake type and how an electronic one releases. Renault's manual states the parking brake "is released as soon as the vehicle is started and acceleration begins", while still telling you to check it is fully applied before leaving the vehicle.

The feature can also vanish quietly, because it leans on the stability and braking network. Trade repair sources put a "hill start assist not available" message down to a sensor or stability-control fault. Those are not manufacturer documents, but the shape of it is uncontroversial: something is wrong upstream.

The properly sourced bit is the bit that matters on the day. From the tester's checks at the vehicle: "If a warning light remains on after the engine has been started, in some cases this may result in the test not proceeding and a non-conducted form being issued to the applicant." You are not checking so you can decide whether to use the feature. You are checking so its absence never surprises you.

The handbrake and the biting point: the method worth owning

Because your version has no clock on it.

The sequence, in the order I teach it:

  • Stop first, then secure. Parking brake firmly on once the car has actually stopped, not while it is still rolling, because applying it early is one of the RSA's listed handbrake faults. First gear selected.
  • Clutch up to the biting point and hold it. The engine note changes and the car settles. If the biting point is still vague, that is lesson-six material in our learner lesson course.
  • More gas than you would use on the flat. Gravity takes a cut. Not a rev-up, just more.
  • Full observation, including the glance over your right shoulder, before anything moves.
  • Release the parking brake only once the car is already trying to climb. Release early and you are asking your feet to catch a car that has already started moving, which is the roll the tester sees.

On the gas, the point Roadcraft makes is worth borrowing, with the caveat that it is the UK police driver's handbook and carries no weight with an Irish tester: a low gear gives you a lot of turning power and very little speed, which is exactly what climbing needs, and the trade-off is traction. Bury the accelerator in first and you get wheelspin instead of progress.

The RSA describes no technique, but it does describe what it wants: "Some controls require a degree of coordination and should be demonstrated smoothly by the applicant." Coordination, demonstrated smoothly. That is the hill start.

The mark you actually lose on a hill

What I see most often is not the roll. It is everything the learner stopped doing while worrying about the roll.

The first fault example under Observations is "Not looking around when moving off", and separately "A safety glance is required before moving off from the kerb". Two marks on the one manoeuvre, both of which go missing when a candidate's whole attention is on the rev counter. Progress is a third heading, where Grade 2 reads "Inadequate progress including at traffic lights. Causing obstruction." Sit frozen on a hill and you have swapped one fault for another.

Why own the manual method if the car can do it? Duration. The assisted version has a clock on it, one or two seconds. Yours does not. Your handbrake holds the car as long as you leave it on: any gradient, in traffic, with a full load, with the engine stalled.

The three ordinary hills the system does not cover

The test's hill is one hill on one afternoon.

1. Queueing traffic on a hill

Hill-start assist is finished in a second or two. Stop-start traffic on a slope is a different problem, and the one the RSA writes about directly: "Not applying the handbrake when stopped for a period of time. (only where there are consequences i.e. vehicle rolling back/forward)."

Read that bracket carefully. The fault attaches to the consequence, not to the omission. Nobody marks you for leaving the handbrake alone at a two-second pause. They mark you for the car drifting into the space behind it. Roadcraft, the UK police driver's handbook, treats when to bother with the handbrake at a short stop as a matter of experience, which is fair enough for a career driver. It is a British manual with no standing here: you are assessed against a document that names the incline case and the stopped-for-a-period case explicitly, so on test, use it.

2. A steep pull-away with the car loaded

Makers size the held pressure to the gradient the sensor detects, and the published limits are candid. A US road-safety education site run by the National Safety Council with the University of Iowa states that hill start assist "does not increase your traction", is not intended for inclines so steep normal braking would not hold the car, and may not work on snow or ice. Four adults and a boot of shopping on a steep road in Knocklyon is a clutch-control problem, and always was.

3. Reverse manoeuvres and mid-manoeuvre stops

These systems work only in the direction gravity is fighting you: a forward gear facing uphill, reverse facing downhill. A reverse around a corner on a slope contains pauses far longer than any hold time above. The manoeuvre needing the most clutch control is the one where the assistance has already expired.

Local note from me. The ground around Tallaght and the N81, up through Knocklyon and Templeogue, is properly hilly, and parts of Navan are no different. I will not name a specific hill as "the test hill". The Standard Procedures say test routes are revised on an ongoing basis, so a named hill would date badly. But if you are testing out of Tallaght, driving the local slopes beforehand is worth more than anything you can read.

Automatics: three different things with three different jobs

Creep, auto hold and an electronic parking brake are not the same feature.

Almost every confused conversation I have about automatics on hills comes down to these three being treated as one thing, and then the wrong one being trusted. Separate them by name.

Creep is idle torque passing through the torque converter. General Motors' own patent on hill hold puts it well: at idle the torque is "generally sufficient to enable slight forward rolling of the vehicle (i.e., creeping)" on the flat and on slight grades "generally sufficient to hold the vehicle at a stand still", but on higher grades "vehicle roll-back can occur". Not on a mild slope, then. Yes on a real one. Creep is not a brake.

A note on the word. Elsewhere on this site "creeping" means a clutch-control skill: the slow edge forward at a closed junction we teach as peep and creep. The creep here is a gearbox idling against your brake. Same word, different animal.

Auto hold keeps the car stationary until you press the accelerator. The Australian motoring title Practical Motoring draws the line cleanly: auto hold holds "until the throttle is pressed which could be several minutes or more", where hill-start assist is "usually only intended to prevent your vehicle from rolling backwards as you transition from the brake to the throttle". It works on the flat too, and because it holds you with the service brakes your brake lights stay lit: if the car behind sees red, that is the footbrake circuit, not the parking brake. The same source warns that "Auto-Hold doesn't replace your vehicle's handbrake".

An electronic parking brake is the actual parking brake, and the one the RSA names. It can release itself as you drive away, which surprises people, but it is still the control that secures the car. That is the whole belief you need on test.

One more automatic rule, and it is non-conducted territory rather than fault territory: "On a vehicle with Automatic Transmission the right foot must be used for braking in normal driving", with the left acceptable only for slow manoeuvring in confined areas. Persist after being advised and the tester returns to the centre with a non-conducted sheet. Passing in an automatic also gives you code 78, automatics only: see automatic driving lessons.

The questions learners actually send us about hills.

Are you allowed to use hill-start assist on the Irish driving test?

NO RULE EITHER WAY

Neither RSA document mentions hill-start assist, hill hold or auto hold once, so there is nothing permitting it and nothing banning it. The control the marking guidelines do name is the parking brake, manual or electronic. Secure the car with that and what the software is doing in the background is not something anyone is marking.

Can I use a car with an electronic handbrake for the Irish driving test?

YES

The marking guidelines describe the control as the "Parking / Hand brake, i.e. manual or electronic brake whichever is fitted". An electronic parking brake is the parking brake for test purposes. Learn how yours applies and releases before the day, because some of them let go on their own: Renault's manual says its electronic parking brake releases as soon as the car is started and acceleration begins.

Is rolling back on a hill start an automatic fail?

NO, AND BE WARY OF ANYONE WHO SAYS IT IS

We say on our own test faults page that rolling back even slightly is a Grade 2, and we stand behind that as an instructor's reading. It is not a sentence the RSA published, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.

What the RSA published is the handbrake fault list, a Vehicle Controls chart where Grade 2 reads "Serious misuse of primary control" and Grade 3 reads "Dangerously incompetent use of primary control", and a marking scale on which the lowest band is not recorded. Where your roll lands is tester judgement. A small roll, calmly recovered, is normally a Grade 2 at worst.

My car stalls on hills. Will hill-start assist save me?

IT DOES THE OPPOSITE

The system needs the engine running, and Volkswagen's handbook wording says the function is deactivated immediately if the engine is switched off or has stalled. The moment you most need help is the moment it withdraws. Stall recovery is its own skill: parking brake on, neutral, restart, gear, observations, then move off.

What we cannot tell you

The gaps, stated plainly.

  • Whether the RSA has any view on hill-start assist. It appears in neither document, and neither do hill hold, auto hold or automatic creep. The parking brake is the whole of what is settled.
  • Exactly where a roll-back lands. "Rolling back is a Grade 2" is our reading of the handbrake bullets plus the marking bands plus tester judgement, not an RSA sentence.
  • How many Irish cars have it fitted. We found no fitment dataset for the Irish fleet. The one figure we did find came from a commercial market-research blog we would not cite for the time of day.
  • How long your car holds. The numbers above are per model. Two sources here are also not manufacturer or regulator documents: the Volkswagen text was read on an owners' manual site, and the "not available" explanation comes from trade repair sources.
  • Whether any of this makes you safer. This site publishes that formal driver training has not been shown to reduce crash involvement: the Cochrane review of post-licence driver education (Ker and colleagues, CD003734, 24 trials) put the relative risk of a crash at 0.98, 95% CI 0.96 to 1.01. We are not making an exception because it suits an argument here. Nothing on this page is evidence that the manual method makes you safer on the road. What it covers is what the test assesses and what the technology does: does driver training actually work.

What to do this week

Five things, none of which take long.

  • Run the ten-minute check above on both cars. If you cannot find the feature under any of its names, assume it is not there.
  • Test the parking brake on a slope. Firmly applied, neutral, feet off. If it slips, garage now rather than an N4 on test day.
  • Do one hill start with the parking brake and one on the pedals alone, same slope, with an instructor beside you. Feeling the difference beats reading about it.
  • Practise holding on a hill, not only pulling away from one. Forward two car lengths, stop, repeat, the way real traffic makes you.
  • Stall on purpose on a hill, somewhere safe. Find out what the car stops doing for you, then run the recovery.
A permit reminder: learner permit holders cannot drive unaccompanied, so all of this happens on a lesson or with a qualified accompanying driver, never alone. Hill practice fits naturally into the 12 mandatory EDT lessons, not the week before the test.

The tester will say one scripted sentence and then wait for you to be ready. Be the person who knows exactly which hand is doing the work.
