Practice Case 1 – Pádraig

15 Questions
Scenario

Pádraig delivers building supplies with a 3-axle rigid truck on conventional steel suspension. He was due out early, and with the yard busy he skipped most of his walk-around check, glancing only at the mirrors and lights. He also left the tachograph mode switch untouched while he loaded.

His first run was along a regional road, where he sat at 85 km/h to hold on to his delivery slot. Back at the yard, he was asked to move a small van — a vehicle that is exempt and out of scope of the tachograph rules — across town. Before driving it he used the tachograph's manual input facility to record that time as other work.

A diversion on the afternoon run took him towards a railway bridge with a 4.4 metre height sign. The travel height of his truck was 4.5 metres. Pádraig stopped in a safe place before the bridge and re-planned his route rather than chance it.

At a checkpoint that evening a Garda asked for his licence, his CPC card and his driver records for the current day and the previous 28 calendar days. Walking around the truck, the Garda found the front offside tyre worn below the legal limit, with the sidewall scuffed from repeated kerb strikes. An RSA vehicle inspector was called and placed a prohibition on the truck until the tyre was replaced. Pádraig finished the day waiting at the roadside for a fitter, with his last delivery still on board.

Q1. What is the Maximum Authorised Mass of a 3-axle rigid truck with conventional suspension?
25 tonnes. (With road-friendly air suspension a 3-axle rigid may go higher; overloading any truck is illegal.)
Q2. What is the maximum permitted speed of a truck on a regional road?
80 km/h. At 85 km/h Pádraig was over the limit for his vehicle regardless of the posted limit for cars.
Q3. What driver records must be produced at a roadside inspection?
Records for the current day and the previous 28 calendar days — on the driver card, on charts, or as manual records.
Q4. Was Pádraig right to make a manual input before driving the out-of-scope van?
Yes. Time spent driving a vehicle that is exempt from tachograph rules during the working day must be recorded as other work using the manual input facility.
Q5. What mode should the tachograph show while a driver loads or checks the vehicle?
Other work ⚒ — loading and walk-around checks are working time, not driving and not rest. Pádraig left the switch untouched, so his record was wrong.
Q6. What does the 4.4 m sign at the bridge mean?
A low bridge ahead — the safe headroom is 4.4 metres, and a taller vehicle must not attempt to pass under it.
Q7. Was stopping and re-planning the route the right decision?
Yes. A driver should know the travel height of the vehicle, plan routes for low bridges in advance, and never chance a restriction.
Q8. What is the minimum legal tread depth for truck tyres?
1.6 mm — and a tyre should be replaced well before it wears that far.
Q9. What typically causes damage to a tyre's sidewall?
Hitting or mounting kerbs. Sidewall damage weakens the tyre and can lead to a blowout.
Q10. Which documents may a Garda request from a truck driver?
Driving licence, CPC card and the driver's hours records for today plus the previous 28 days.
Q11. What powers does an RSA vehicle inspector have on finding defects?
They can place a prohibition order preventing the vehicle from moving, or require a CVRT re-test at an approved test centre.
Q12. What should a full walk-around check cover?
Fluid levels, tyres, lights, glass and mirrors, doors, bodywork, markings and coupling gear where fitted — not just a glance at mirrors and lights.
Q13. What is the maximum permitted length of a rigid truck?
12 metres.
Q14. What colour must the reflective markings on the rear of a truck be?
Red at the rear; the side markings can be white or yellow.
Q15. What danger did Pádraig accept by driving on a badly worn tyre?
A blowout — on a front wheel this can mean losing steering control, with serious consequences for him and other road users.

Practice Case 2 – Marius

15 Questions
Scenario

Marius drives a six-axle articulated combination — a three-axle tractor unit with a three-axle semi-trailer fitted with Electronic Stability Control. Today's load was steel girders with sharp edges. The loading crew offered him web straps with protective sleeves, but Marius was used to ropes and roped the load down instead. He set off without planning any stop to re-check the load.

On the motorway he held the truck at 90 km/h. He had started driving at 06:00, and at 10:30 he pulled into a service area where he took a 15 minute break. After a short drive to his first delivery he later took a 30 minute break, completing his break time for that driving period.

In the afternoon a car cut across his lane and braked hard, and Marius had to brake sharply. He felt the load shift towards the front of the trailer. At a weighbridge check further on, the shifted load had put one axle over its permitted weight, even though the overall combination was within its limit.

The last leg home included a long steep descent. At the top of the hill Marius changed to a lower gear and engaged the retarder, letting the endurance brake hold his speed so that the service brakes stayed cool all the way down.

Q1. What is the maximum gross combination weight of a 3-axle tractor unit with a 3-axle semi-trailer fitted with ESC?
46 tonnes. Since 1 June 2015 this applies to 3+3 combinations provided they are fitted with Electronic Stability Control.
Q2. What is the maximum motorway speed for a goods vehicle over 3,500 kg MAM?
90 km/h — Marius was at the limit, not under it, which leaves no margin at all.
Q3. Why were ropes the wrong choice for the steel girders?
Sharp edges fray ropes until they snap and the load comes loose. The right equipment is web straps with protective sleeves over the edges.
Q4. Why should a load be re-checked during the journey?
Loads settle and move as the vehicle travels, loosening straps and chains. The lashings should be checked at regular intervals, not only at departure.
Q5. What happens to a loosely secured load under sharp braking?
It moves towards the front of the vehicle — exactly what Marius felt through the trailer.
Q6. Was the 15-minute then 30-minute break arrangement legal?
Yes. The 45-minute break may be split into a 15-minute break followed by a 30-minute break, in that order.
Q7. How long may a driver drive before a break is due?
4.5 hours. Starting at 06:00, Marius was at his limit when he pulled in at 10:30.
Q8. What is the maximum daily driving time?
9 hours, which may be extended to 10 hours on no more than two days in the week.
Q9. What are the weekly and fortnightly driving limits?
56 hours in a week and 90 hours in any two consecutive weeks — so a 56-hour week leaves only 34 hours for the next week.
Q10. What are the advantages of using the retarder on a long descent?
Speed is held without using the service brake, the brakes stay cool for when they are really needed, and it can be used at different levels alongside the gears.
Q11. What causes brake fade?
Overheating of the service brakes through overuse — typically holding the footbrake on a long descent instead of using a low gear and the retarder.
Q12. How can a shifted load put an axle overweight while the total stays legal?
The weight is no longer distributed evenly, so one axle carries more than its share. Uneven distribution also changes the centre of gravity and affects braking and steering.
Q13. Why must a high-loaded vehicle slow down for bends and roundabouts?
A high centre of gravity makes the vehicle liable to roll over if it changes direction sharply at speed.
Q14. How should a driver stand when lifting a load by hand?
Feet about hip-width apart with one leg slightly forward of the other, letting the legs do the lifting.
Q15. Who is responsible for the security of the load once the vehicle is on the road?
The driver. Whatever happened at loading, it is the driver's job to be satisfied the load is secure before and during the journey.

Practice Case 3 – Emer

Scenario

Emer drives a 4-axle rigid tipper with road-friendly air suspension, delivering stone to a housing site. It had rained all night and the ground on site was soft. Pulling away from the stockpile her wheels began to spin, so she engaged the diff-lock, moved off slowly, and disengaged it again as soon as the truck was underway.

Her next job was collecting steel pipes from a merchant. Loaded, the pipes extended 2 metres beyond the rear of the body, so Emer marked the overhang with a red flag for the daytime run. The pipes were packed tightly so they could not move against each other, and she checked the lashings again at her first stop.

The route to the site passed through an urban slow zone, and Emer kept to 30 km/h past a school just as classes ended and children crowded the footpaths. At the site entrance she was guided in by a banksman while reversing, keeping him in view in her mirrors the whole way back.

Leaving the site empty, she stopped to clear the mud from her wheels, lights and rear markings and checked her tyres for cuts before rejoining the public road. On the long hill down towards town she chose a low gear early, knowing that gravity would push the truck faster all the way down.

32 tonnes — with conventional steel suspension the same truck is limited to 30 tonnes.
Q2. What is the diff-lock for?
It locks the wheels on a driven axle to rotate at the same speed, improving traction on soft ground, mud, snow or ice.
Q3. When should the diff-lock be disengaged?
As soon as the vehicle is underway. It is a low-speed aid only — Emer got this exactly right.
Q4. How must a rear overhang of more than 1 metre be marked?
With a red flag or marker by day and a lamp by night.
Q5. What is the maximum permitted rear load overhang?
3 metres. Emer's 2-metre overhang was legal once it was flagged.
Q6. What is the speed limit for a truck in an urban slow zone?
30 km/h — the same as for every other vehicle.
Q7. Why do school finishing times demand extra care from a truck driver?
Children are unpredictable and may step or run onto the road with no warning — and from a high cab they are easily hidden close to the vehicle.
Q8. What is the safest way to reverse into a site entrance?
Use a guide — a banksman — agree the signals first, and stop immediately if you lose sight of them in the mirrors.
Q9. Why should a load like pipes be packed tightly?
Tightly packed items are far less likely to move than loosely packed ones — that means better load security and better vehicle stability.
Q10. Why did Emer check the lashings again at her first stop?
Because loads settle during a journey and lashings loosen. Checking at intervals is part of the driver's job, not an optional extra.
Q11. Why clear mud from the wheels, lights and markings before the public road?
Mud carried onto the road endangers other traffic, and dirty lights and reflective markings make a large vehicle far harder to see.
Q12. What does gravity do to a laden truck on a downhill gradient?
It increases the vehicle's speed all the way down — which is why the low gear must be selected before the descent, not during it.
Q13. Why does a loaded tipper need extra care on bends and roundabouts?
The load gives it a high centre of gravity, so it can become unstable or roll if it changes direction sharply at speed.
Q14. What tyre damage should be checked for after site work?
Cuts and embedded stones from rubble and hardcore — damage that can turn into a blowout at road speed.
Q15. What advantage does road-friendly air suspension give besides comfort?
It spreads the load more gently over the road surface, and the law rewards it with a higher permitted MAM — 32 tonnes instead of 30 on a 4-axle rigid.
