The limit point: how to read a bend you've never seen

Every bend asks the same question: how fast can I safely take this? Most drivers answer by feel. That works until the bend tightens, the surface changes or the road turns unfamiliar. Police drivers answer with the limit point: a single visual reference that converts what you can see into how fast you should go, on any bend, anywhere, in any conditions. Here's the full technique, plus the two traps it protects you from.

Section 1

One sentence governs every bend

Before any technique, Roadcraft states the rule that all cornering decisions must satisfy.

You must be able to stop safely within the distance you can see to be clear on your own side of the road.

Read it twice, because both halves matter. "Within the distance you can see" means your speed is set by your view, not by the speed limit, your memory of the road, or the car in front. "On your own side of the road" means you don't get to count the oncoming lane as stopping space. Cornering is one of the most demanding things we routinely do with a car. The vehicle loses stability, the tyres work harder, and the faster and tighter the bend, the greater those demands become. We've covered the physics of grip and cornering forces in Guide 15; this article is about the judgement side, and Roadcraft's five principles for any bend:

Set up where you can see most and conflict least; positioning is its own guide.

All slowing happens on the approach, in a straight line, never mid-corner.

Right gear for that speed

Chosen before you turn in, so both hands stay on the wheel and the engine is ready to pull.

Constant speed through

Gentle, steady throttle for maximum stability: neither braking nor surging mid-bend.

Principle five is the golden rule itself: able to stop within the distance you can see to be clear, on your own side. The four steps above only work if this one is never negotiable.

Section 2

What the limit point actually is

It's already in your windscreen on every bend. You've just never had a name for it.

The limit point is the furthest point along the road to which you have an uninterrupted view of the road surface. Visually, it's where the right-hand edge of the road appears to meet the left-hand edge in the distance. On a straight road it sits far away. As you approach a bend, the edges appear to converge much closer, and that convergence point is your limit point.

Find it on your own windscreen, not on a drawing. Do not take our word for the shape of it. On your next drive, on any bend, look for the spot where the left edge of the road and the right edge appear to touch. That is the limit point, and you will notice two things straight away: it moves as you move, and everything beyond it is road you cannot see. A drawing would show you somebody else's bend. Your windscreen shows you yours, and yours is the only one you have to stop on.

The logic follows immediately. The more distant the limit point, the faster you may go, because you have more proven-clear road to stop in. The closer the limit point, the slower you must go. That's the entire technique in two sentences; the skill is in what comes next, reading how the point moves.

Section 3

Reading the limit point's movement

The point isn't static. It walks along the road as you drive, and its speed is your speed.

Approaching a bend, watch what the limit point does, and match your speed to the speed at which it appears to move:

It appears stationary

You're closing on it. The bend is coming and your view isn't growing. Adjust your speed so you could stop within the shrinking distance. This is where the slowing happens.

It moves at a constant speed

Just before you enter the bend, the point begins to sweep round with you. Match it: that is your cornering speed. Select the gear for that speed, then hold steady throttle through the curve.

It runs away from you

The bend is opening; your view is growing faster than you're using it. Now you may accelerate, steadily, as the steering straightens.

Notice what this technique does automatically: it's self-adjusting. Fog, rain, a crest, a hedge grown wild: anything that shortens your view pulls the limit point closer, and the rule pulls your speed down with it, without you needing a separate rule for each condition. If the bend tightens mid-corner, the point moves toward you and you ease off; if it's a gentle open curve, the point streams ahead and releases you. One reference, every bend, every condition.

⚠ The limit point is necessary, not sufficient

Use it alongside your other observation links, not instead of them. A chevron sign, a warning triangle or a glimpsed further bend beyond this one can all tell you the limit point alone is underselling the hazard. And Roadcraft adds a special warning for roads you know well: familiar routes are where attention wanders, so make a point of consciously using the limit point precisely where you think you don't need it.

Section 4

Left-hand bends lie to you

The most important refinement in the chapter, and the one Irish rural roads test daily.

On a right-hand bend, the scenery on the outside of the curve (hedges, trees, buildings) sits directly ahead of you, close. On a left-hand bend you're looking across the road, so the same scenery appears further away. The illusion flatters you: the bend looks more open than it is, and drivers carry in more speed than the road can honestly repay.

Roadcraft's correction is precise: on a left-hand bend, treat the centre of the road as the right-hand verge. Read the limit point as the place where the road edge meets the centre line (or the middle of the road if there's no line), because the far half of the road belongs to oncoming traffic and cannot count as your stopping space. Two further cases sharpen the same idea:

A

Single-track roads

On a left-hand bend on a single-track road, the limit point is where the two kerb lines meet. Where the road isn't wide enough for two vehicles to pass, consider doubling your stopping distance, so an oncoming driver has room to stop too. Half the burden is theirs, but plan as if it's all yours.

Night driving

At night the limit point logic runs on headlights: the angle of oncoming beams sweeping a bend is an observation link about its severity, and your own lit distance is your visible distance. The rule doesn't change in the dark; the distance does.

Section 5

The double-apex trap

Some bends are engineered to tighten after they've let you commit. The limit point is your early-warning system.

A double-apex bend presents a gentle curve on the approach, then tightens sharply partway through. Drivers (and especially motorcyclists, for whom Roadcraft notes these bends on left-handers have proved a cause of serious collisions) who plan the whole bend from the curve they first see arrive at the tightening section carrying too much speed, running wide into the path of oncoming traffic.

The defence is exactly the technique from Section 3, applied without complacency: if the limit point stops moving away mid-bend and starts coming back toward you, the bend is tightening, so reduce speed and be prepared to add steering. On an unfamiliar bend, hold something in reserve for precisely this possibility: enter at a speed that leaves you options, not at the maximum the first view appeared to permit.

This is why "constant throttle through the bend" has a footnote. Steady speed is for a constant curve. The moment the curve changes, you re-assess and re-apply the system, and the limit point tells you when.

Section 6

The cross view: seeing around the bend before you're in it

Advanced drivers don't take bends one at a time. They link them.

The limit point tells you about the road up to the furthest visible point. The cross view is how you cheat a look beyond it: as you approach a bend, find the limit point, then look across the inside of the curve, through gaps in hedges, over low walls or between buildings, for clues about where the road goes next. A car exiting the bend ahead, a roofline, a line of telegraph poles or lamp posts curving away: each is a preview of road you can't yet see directly.

Used bend after bend, cross views let you link corners into a flow: spotting that this left-hander feeds a right-hander, adopting an early position for the second before you've finished the first, noticing the speed-limit sign or junction lurking beyond the exit. It turns a winding road from a series of surprises into a sequence you're already planning two moves deep. It's the same anticipation skill that hazard perception training builds in town.

Section 7

A bend through the system of car control

Putting it together: IPSGA applied to a single corner.

Roadcraft's system of car control sequences every hazard as Information → Position → Speed → Gear → Acceleration. On a bend it runs like this:

Information

Scan for traffic ahead and behind, the surface and weather, the limit point, plus lateral clues: hedgerow lines, lamp posts, cross views, signs.

P

Position

Right-hand bends: towards the nearside for the earlier view (watching kerbside surface and blind exits). Left-hand bends: towards the centre line, but only if oncoming traffic allows, it won't mislead anyone, and it actually gains something. Safety outranks view, always.

S

Speed

Set by the limit point plus the bend's severity, surface, weather, width and your vehicle. The aim is a safe stopping distance, not a maximum cornering speed.

G + A

Gear, then acceleration

Gear chosen for the entry speed, before turn-in. Gentle throttle holds a constant speed through a constant curve; when the limit point runs and the steering straightens, accelerate away.

Note what's absent: braking in the bend, gear changes mid-corner, positioning for "the racing line". A vehicle is most stable when its weight is evenly distributed and the engine is just pulling, and the system is engineered to keep the car in that state through the part of the road where stability is scarcest. Section 8

Why this matters more in Ireland than almost anywhere

A technique invented for police pursuit training earns its keep on the R-road to your house.

Ireland's road network is overwhelmingly rural single carriageway: narrow, hedge-lined, unpredictably cambered, and full of bends engineered by history rather than by highway design standards. These are exactly the roads where "I know this road" replaces observation, where left-handers hide oncoming tractors, and where the difference between a near-miss and a collision is whether the driver could stop in the distance they could actually see. The limit point is the single most transferable advanced-driving skill for Irish conditions, and unlike most advanced techniques, a learner can start using it on lesson one.

Roadcraft closes its chapter with a question worth adopting permanently: next time you meet a significant bend on an open road, ask yourself "what if there's a pedestrian in the road just beyond my limit point?" If your honest answer is "I'd hit them", your speed has failed the only test that matters. In a country of walkers, cyclists and horses on unlit boreens, that's not a thought experiment.

Learners

Start naming the limit point aloud on practice drives: "it's holding… it's moving… it's running." Verbalising it builds the habit faster than anything, and it directly improves the "progress" and "position" parts of your test marking.

Nervous & returning drivers

The limit point replaces guesswork with a rule, and rules are calming. If bends on rural roads frighten you, this technique gives you a concrete answer to "am I going too fast?" at every moment of every bend.

Experienced drivers

Try it on the road you drive every day. Familiarity is where Roadcraft says attention fails first. If consciously tracking the limit point changes your speed on a bend you've taken a thousand times, the technique just paid for itself.
