Learner Driver
The Driver Theory Test in Ireland — Book It, Pass It
The theory test is the first official step to your licence — and the one most people put off. Here's exactly how to book it, what's on it, the pass mark, and how to be ready first time.
Why the Theory Test Comes First
You can't get a learner permit without it.
You must pass the driver theory test before you can apply for your first learner permit. No permit means you can't legally take lessons on the road or drive accompanied — so the theory test is the gate everything else depends on. Get it done early and the rest of the journey opens up.
Good news: the theory test is one of the most predictable exams you'll ever sit. Every question is drawn from a published bank, and with a week or two of proper study, most people pass comfortably first time.

How long your pass certificate lasts
The car/motorcycle (category B) test is 40 multiple-choice questions; you need 35 correct to pass, within 45 minutes. It's taken on a touchscreen at a test centre. Truck and bus categories have their own, separate tests.
Two things to plan around. Your pass certificate is valid for 2 years — if you don't apply for your learner permit within that window, you'll have to sit (and pay for) the test again. The fee for the car/motorcycle test is €45 — always confirm the current price when booking on theorytest.ie, as fees can change.
How to Book Your Test
Online is quickest — and there's only one official site.
1
Go to the official site
Book only at theorytest.ie — the one official RSA booking site. Avoid lookalike sites that charge a markup for the same test.
2
Choose your category
Select the car/motorcycle (B) test, or the truck/bus category if you're going professional. Have your PPS number to hand.
3
Pick a centre, date & pay
Choose a nearby test centre and an available slot, then pay by card or Revolut. You'll get a confirmation to bring with you.
4
Request support if you need it
Accommodations are available for candidates with reading difficulties or specific needs — including audio versions and extra time. Arrange this when booking.
Age note: from 1 November 2026, candidates must be at least 15 years old on the date of their test appointment. Check the current eligibility rules when you book.
What to Study — and How
The whole test comes from known material. Use it.
The core material
- The Rules of the Road — the official RSA handbook covers signs, rules and safe driving
- The official theory test question bank — every exam question is drawn from it
- Road signs and markings — a reliable chunk of marks if you learn them cold
- Categories of vehicle, speed limits, and rules on alcohol and penalty points
How to actually prepare
- Use a reputable practice app or the official prep materials and do full mock tests
- Don't just memorise answers — understand why, so real lessons make sense later
- Keep sitting mocks until you're scoring comfortably above 35 every time
- Spend extra time on the topics you keep getting wrong, not the ones you already know
Smart move: the theory you learn here is the foundation for your EDT lessons and the practical test. Treat it as real learning, not box-ticking, and the rest of the process gets easier.
On Test Day
What to bring and what to expect.
Bring with you
- Valid photo ID (e.g. passport) — you won't be tested without it
- Your booking confirmation
- Any documentation arranged for accommodations
- Arrive early — latecomers can lose their slot and fee
How it runs
- You sit at a touchscreen — there's a short practice section first to get used to it
- You can flag questions and come back to them before finishing
- You'll get your result straight away
- Pass, and you receive a certificate to use when applying for your learner permit
After You Pass
Don't let the clock run out.
1
Apply for your learner permit
Take your theory pass certificate to the NDLS (book an appointment at ndls.ie) along with the required documents and eyesight report. Do this within 2 years or the test expires.
2
Start your EDT lessons
Once you hold a category B learner permit you can begin your 12 Essential Driver Training lessons with an approved driving instructor.
3
Build toward the driving test
Practise between lessons with a qualified accompanying driver, and book your practical test when you and your instructor agree you're ready.
